A Visiting Sailor's Guide to SMSC's Club Racing Calendar

You don't need to live in Saint Martin to race here — but it helps to know what you're walking into before you show up wanting a spot on a startline.

SMSC's racing calendar covers two different things, and knowing which one you're aiming for changes how you should plan your visit.

Two Different Kinds of Racing on One Calendar

The Caribbean Championship Regatta stops are the higher-stakes end of the calendar — one-design racing against identical boats, with results that count toward the season standings. Alongside that, SMSC runs a general club racing calendar throughout the season: lower-key, more regular, and a much easier place for a visiting sailor to get real racing reps.

If you're newer to multihull racing, the club calendar is the more realistic entry point. If you're already racing competitively elsewhere, the Caribbean Championship stops are where the level — and the stakes — match what you're used to.

When the Season Actually Runs

Racing runs roughly from December to April. That's not a coincidence — race organizers build a calendar around reliable wind, the same trade winds that make this period the island's high season for training too.

What a Visiting Sailor Needs

The most reliable way in is to reach out before you arrive rather than showing up and hoping for a spare seat. Let SMSC know your experience level and your dates, and whether you're interested in club racing or aiming for a Caribbean Championship stop — that context is what determines whether you're slotted onto an existing boat or pointed toward a Training Clinic or Race Prep session first to get race-ready.

Coming with some multihull racing experience, even from a different class, makes this considerably easier. Coming with none at all isn't disqualifying, but it usually means training before racing, not instead of it.

The Regatta That Puts the Island on the Map

If your visit lines up with March, you'll also be sailing into the middle of the Heineken Regatta — one of the most well-known yacht races in the Caribbean, and not an SMSC event itself, but a huge part of why the island has a racing culture instead of just good weather for it.

It's an excellent reason to time a trip around, even if you're not racing in it directly — the level of sailors on the water, and the energy on shore, is hard to find anywhere else on the calendar.
